Peda (simplisy)

These little treats hail from the town of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, India. I actually learned it during a gay pride march in Poznan from a girl who, in turn, learned it from a Hare Krishna follower on some festival. And up until recently, I didn’t know it was of Indian origin.

Peda - simplisy

They are delightful, but are pretty filling and caloric, so do moderate.

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams powdered milk
  • 250 grams butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • few tablespoons – kewra water or yoghurt
  • dried fruits
  • 0.5 teaspoon cardamom powder

Method:

  • make sure butter is soft, room temperature
  • put all dry ingredients into a bowl and add butter
  • knead, adding kewra water or yoghurt until the consitency of the mixture allows you to shape it into little balls
  • once shaped, refrigerate until they set fully

Note: Kewra water can be bought in most Indian shops under this name. Alternatively, you can use yoghurt.

In this recipe, I used barberries and white mulberry, but raisins, candied lemon peel, or similar will work. I tend to go for milder flavours rather than bold citrusy ones generally, as I find they work better with the taste of powdered milk.

Powdered milk can be obtained in Indian shops again or in Polish shops, as in my case.
